music video

Music Video

CLIENT:        Miguel Cravinho  (PT)
                        Music Producer

PURPOSE:    create music video for projection/ web use

BRIEFING:    I want something that follows every step of the moods in the music.Dark and light.

CONCEPT:    :    The idea i have in my mind for this is of a submersed city, that reencarnates and is re-born.A dark well with no end ,a dark and cold place, this portrays the beginning of everything, the origin. The continuous growth, and the urge to acquire,to consume,or even persuade, takes us to a confused world and to a drastic change,a voyage, with no limits or beginning. It makes us think about the evolution in everything and the growth of quantity instead of quality.

I decided i wanted to use real footage,3D and compositing. For this i wandered through canary wharf and around center London,as we both agreed we wanted to shoot modern architecture to give a highly urban look for some parts of the music.I started doing some modelling for underwater parts, and experimented with light fog and environment fog in maya. This created always some glitches in the image(black pixel)wich i wasn’t able to solve.
The look for the whole thing was intended to be a blend between organic tech modelling and abstract, pure shapes, integrated in certain parts with live footage. The research i did,was based in graphic design, from videos like onedotzero or resfest, from movies like THX,or  works from matthew barney , chris cunnigham.I found some really interesting videos on  the internet.

Not having developed further this project on time for delivery at uni,we have still decided on completing the music video. The client has moved two weeks ago,and being someone i know i have been working with in the music and developing better ways to visualize his song.Through some tests i did i realize i need to do more tests with after effects and more modelling. The shoot will be done around Liverpool street, and some photo stills will also be used.Although i didn’t finish this piece, until now this has been the project that was more fun to collaborate and work with the client,as we discussed lots of issues and intents..here is the music at this point.

Chocolate cake turnround

Chocolate Cake Visualization
Chocolate cake turnround

CLIENT: Afonso e Bernardo Pinto (PT)

PURPOSE: create an HD Chocolate cake turnround for projection/ web use

BRIEFING: We need a Chocolate Cake visualization for a site we are starting and for print. The cake must be in a proper sized plate and have a wrap paper.

I mostly used this image for reference_

And some examples for lighting-

This client was the hardest one to contact with, and discuss ideas.«diogo do it how you think works best«.Basically  that was the concept given...So  the creativity i used was towards how i showed the product.Specially the lighting and materials. At midpoint of the project ,i sent an ambient occlusion test of the model for approval.

The feed back was good so i passed on to the next stages.
I looked at some more ad magazines and images to check the lighting on products
And studied a tutorial on the subject.
some tests.

The hardest part to achieve, for me,was the foam/Chantilly on top of the cake and surrounding the cherry. It looks ok but im not really happy with it,specially the modelling of that part.As i was lighting and framing the model,i thought it needed another element to achieve a better composition ,for this i created a simple fork  wich i think helped the general composition.Happy with this i passed on to shading .This was good as i improved my skills and was pleased with the results.I tested a lot of shaders to try and get the chocolate material, and am really happy on how i solved the cherry reflections. The model still need some more tweaks to look more natural, wich i did just before rendering it out.I have sent this project to the client who liked and asked me for some still images wich i have sent already.overall this was really enjoyable and a good test to improve lighting and shading skills and a bit on the texturing side.

vj f_usion ident

VJ   F USION    IDENT
VJ IDENTITY

CLIENT:        Vj F_USION  (PT)
                        video jammer / Live performer

PURPOSE:    create an HD ident for projection/ web use

BRIEFING:     I would like you to create an ident for my professional use, be it visual live performances, web banners or animated flyers. I need it to be a short  movie, not longer than 5 seconds, one that  can work on its own as well as in loop.
In this Ident I need my stage name to be readable, yet not in an obvious manner.
I suggest you use the word FUSION's definition and try to create a fresh, edgy, vibrant visual object, in which apparently random objects eventually merge into   the words VJ F_USION.  You can use any font you find fit, but i'd rather have a costume font, one that projects a professional, competitive, creative and highly effective image.
You can use the colors you think more appropriate, but I would like to have a version in the colors I usually use, which are purples, blues and pinks., in no particular order or specific treatment, so experiment as much as you please.

CONCEPT:    Among the debris of a recent creative explosion, a few blocks of ideas drift apart merging into the words VJ F_USION, representing the deconstruction of preexisting  ideas and its rebirth into a new visual concept.

After discussing this brief with the client,i started doing some research. The one i thought of immediately was of a tv show that i follow, called Fringe.

The channel Four idents, in wich we only see the number 4 at a certain point, inspired me for the camera movement on the clients ident.

                      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CVdllN67OQ

This project allowed me to understand and experiment more with lighting in maya.As soon as i had a rough test of the idea i sent it to the client whom approved and just said to use the colors mentioned in the brief. In overall i am happy with the final result and feedback from the client, although i think it needed something more on the end when we finally see the full name in front view,i thought maybe some post effect in after effects, but i didn´t have time to develop a good idea or test it,as my skills with that software are still very basic. This project also made me more interested in motion graphics and in interactive animation. So, this has allowed me to further my skills in lighting, animating and rendering.I tried using ambient occlusion but in the end it wasn’t necessary because it killed some of the shininess on the shapes,so i ended up just rendering a beauty pass with motion blur.here is the final video.

Work for this unit

I have chosen to search for an external client brief. After talking to some people, some projects appeared.I was asked to do a turntable animation of a chocolate cake,to do an ident for a VJ,and to do possibly 2 video clips. The music videos are related to electronic music:one is more minimal techno oriented, while the other is more downtempo.I have started to do the turn around and the VJ ident, and have already done some research and initiated conversations for ideas for the downtempo vidclip.

Brief for this unit

This unit builds directly on the Industry Exercises 1 and Industry Exercises 2 units, allowing students to use their portfolio of animation skills to develop finished broadcast animation pieces (in small teams) to be shown during Rave on Air, and to generate an individual show-reel to promote those skills to employers. Students also develop more advanced planning and organisational skills necessary to manage team productions.

This unit has the potential to allow inter-faculty collaboration through the use of animation to promote the work of other courses in the creation of animated advertisements for Rave on Air (product design for example). Intra-faculty collaboration is also possible through the use of other disciplines such as post production and sound design that naturally complement the animation industry. These collaborations will be negotiated on a per team basis.

Aims of the Unit

· To enable students to initiate, plan, and complete complex team projects.
· To enable students to work to broadcast standards of quality.
· To provide experience of establishing and developing team project schedules and tracking progress towards project completion.
· To enable students to demonstrate and promote the range and quality of their animation skills through the production of a show-reel.

The emphasis for this brief is upon fitness for broadcast purposes, if you read the learning outcomes and assessment criteria that follow this section then you will see that one of the main areas for your assessment is upon how well you meet technical parameters to enable your work to be broadcast.

You will be required to work in small teams, ideally, two, or three people per team.

You will be required to submit three pieces of work for assessment.

· An individual reflective journal (Blog)
· An individual interactive DVD showreel
· A group film fit for broadcast

Journal
This should focus on your plans for this project, your brief, your project schedule, and your performance as a team member. These can be supplemented by a group journal to help communication with team members, but the primary concern is your individual reflective account. These should be hosted on Blogspot, or Wordpress and the URLs submitted to your tutor.

Showreel
Your showreel will take the form of a menu driven interactive DVD where users will be able to select which of your work they view. You will be expected to assemble a reel that demonstrates the breadth of your capability, and the diversity of your style as an animator. As such, you may use work from any point in your studies, or from outside your time at college. You may also consider generating new work this term to supplement perceived gaps in your portfolio. The main drivers for assessment here are NOT the quality of the individual pieces of work, but the way in which you choose to present them and to promote yourself…

Movie
This is where the majority of your effort will be directed for this project. You will have to choose a team first of all, ideally a small one of two or three individuals. Then you will have to negotiate a brief for your project. There are three main ways that you can fulfill this part of the brief, but all will depend upon you having a real client, and it is up to YOU to get information from your client to define your brief. This information should include a list of deliverable items, and a set of deadlines.

Way 1
Work as a junior on a BA film project.
Identify the film you want to work on, agree a role, agree deliverables, and then deliver them. It will not be possible to do much in the way of concept or modeling work for these films given the advanced state of their development, but it should be possible to do large amounts of UV mapping and texturing, lighting, rigging and animating.

Way 2
Work towards Rave Live.
This will involve you either working towards doing one of the six channel idents, in which case you will have to contact the graphics students responsible, or towards generating programme content in which case you will have to contact broadcast content creation students to find out their requirements. Be aware that work will need to be ready much in advance of May 19th, so it should be viable within a reduced time frame. Remember the panic that you had at the end of last term? That is a luxury that you do not have this term. It would probably be a good idea to attend all possible meetings about Rave Live, such as the one this Friday (26th) read your email, and look for posters…

The 3rd Way
Find an external client.
You may source a client for your project beyond the confines of college. The same conditions apply, you will negotiate a brief, and whatever work you produce must be produced in a form that is technically suitable for broadcast purposes. Other than that, the subject matter or content are entirely down to you and your client. This is possibly the most challenging of the three ways you can fulfill this project…
